Free Brettney is the story of Brett, a gay evangelical man desperate to stay in the closet. Brett lives in New York City and attends his brother Luka’s very conservative church. He’s dating Weezie, a girl from the church band.

But what happens when Brett meets Dom, a hot pastor-in-training from a progressive church? Will he risk everything to be free?

Our Story

Created by Brett Bainer, Kyle Hughes, and Hannah Seusy, this series is inspired by Brett's experiences in a homophobic church, and how difficult it can be to untangle oneself from conservative religious environments.

Our mission is to see, love, and celebrate young queer people, especially those trapped in non-affirming faith communities. We believe there is a spiritual home for every person, and we seek to amplify the voice of progressive Christianity, so often silenced by the words and actions of Christian nationalism.

We are currently fundraising to film in the spring of 2027, after a successful industry reading at Judson Memorial Church in May of 2026.
